FOREVER TRIUMPHANT, Day 9—Lenten Devotionals
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:4-5
If you have enough faith to respond with longing and admiration to the story of the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus, then there is in you enough faith to invite God to make His Son’s work effective in your life. At the moment of inviting Jesus into your heart, the victory of Jesus begins to work in your world.
FJ HUEGEL: For those who, conscious of their need, are seeking and would enter the way of perennial victory, it will be a great help to realize that they are not seeking something which they do not already have. That is to say, if they have named the name of Jesus in true faith and have surrendered to Him, crowning Him Lord of their lives, as Christians they have been made kings and priests unto God (Rev. 1:6), and as such they have a right to reign. If they fail to reign, they are simply not exercising their rights.
“This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.” The victorious life is not something exotic added to the Christian life. It is not an attainment of a few advanced souls who, after much effort and struggle, have scaled the heights and finally arrived. It is not something which a privileged upper-strata of Christians achieve because, after much searching and no little self-sacrifice, they experienced what others may not have.
PRAYER: Dear God,
While much of the world seems to be repelled, offended, bored, or turned off by Jesus, I find my heart strangely warmed by Him and by everything the Bible says about Him. If He is indeed real, and if His Spirit is indeed present in the world, then I would gladly surrender to him. Grant me to find that surrender to be the ground of my greatest victory over everything that shames, disgusts, or incites me. I ask this in His precious name. Amen.
