Forever Triumphant—Lenten Devotional, Day 2
For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written: “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY. O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:53-57 NASB
Why do we know that God intends for us to have victorious lives? For the gloriously simple reason that God brought Jesus Christ through death to resurrection and intends for us to share in that experience. The resurrection of Jesus is the fact upon which our lives and destinies are built.
FJ HUEGEL: Perhaps none of us have ever given a complete expression in daily life to all that God has for us as Christians and desires that we shall receive in Christ. Our little measure is one thing; God’s universal and eternal standard is another. God’s measure reads: Always triumphant, in every place the savor of His knowledge made manifest.
“But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Here we have the same divine standard set up, only that here the emphasis is not upon time and place. It is not upon “no matter when or what or where.” It is not upon the fact of victory, “come what may.” It is upon the terms whereby victory is ours. It is upon the fact that victory is the gift of God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We shall not go into this now. The “how” of victory will be fully discussed in later chapters. It is simply the fact of victory as God’s universal and eternal standard which now concerns us.
Dear God, thank you for the victory that Jesus experienced. Thank you that somehow that victory is also meant for me. Grant me to understand this, in Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
