Note: this is a Gospel story of being united to Christ.
FOREVER TRIUMPHANT, Day 11—Lenten Devotional
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For he who has died is freed from sin. 8 But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. 9 For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 The death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:3-11
What does it mean to say that “we are united with Christ through baptism?” Baptism is a visible enactment of our belief that Jesus died and rose again for us. In a way, Jesus inaugurates a legal reality which we ratify in baptism. My grandfather calls this reality our “judicial standing” before God.
FJ HUEGEL: “. . . there is no difference in the judicial standing of Christians before God. By their judicial standing, I mean the position God says is their by virtue of the fact that they have received His wondrous gift which is Christ and are found in Him. He says that their position and judicial standing is the very same as that of His Son, Jesus, whose identification with humanity was so real and of such an absolute nature that what befell Him as Son of Man, befell Him as Representative (hu)Man and therefore, befell all who are united to Him by faith. He was crucified, therefore (hu)man was crucified. He died, therefore (hu)man died. He was buried, therefore (hu)man was buried. He was raised up, (hu)man is raised up. He ascended, (hu)man ascended. This is the believer’s judicial position before God—his by an inalienable right; a right which is no different because Christ and believers are one.
Prayer: Dear God,
I can think of no victory greater for me than to be united with Jesus—united in purpose, united in love, united in experience, and united by family relationship. Thank you that in Jesus you have shown that You also want to be united to me. You and your Son are wonderful! Amen.
