On September 27 we will begin a 7 week sermon series on the “I am” sayings in the Gospel of John. In Exodus chapter 3 when God calls Moses to free the children of Israel from the hand of Pharaoh, Moses says this:
“Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
God responded in this way, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:13-14 NIV)
God began the work of redemption by claiming to be the great I AM.
The Gospel of John shows Jesus completing that work of redemption on the cross. As he dies, Jesus says, “It is finished.”
Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus reveals his redemptive, saving identity by means of seven “I am” declarations that are intentionally reminiscent of God’s revelation to Moses. For seven weeks we will be looking at those seven declarations and will see how each has wonderful implications not only for who Jesus is, but for the way we can live in and through Him. These are the seven declarations:
Sept 27 John 6:35 “I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE”
Oct 4 John 8:12 “I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD”
Oct 11 John 10:10 “I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD”
Oct 18 John 10:28 “I AND THE FATHER ARE ONE”
Oct 25 John 11:27 “I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE”
Nov 1 John 14:6 “I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE”
Nov 8 John 15:5 “I AM THE VINE, YOU ARE THE BRANCHES”
I hope you will join us for this pilgrimage through some of the greatest statements in the spiritual history of the world! If you can’t join us in worship, you can download the sermons week-to-week here on the website.
