I will bless those who bless you,
But I will curse those who curse you.
And through you I will bless all the nations.”
Abraham, the father of both Judaism and Islam, is also the pioneer of our Christian faith in so many ways. When Jesus begins His ministry, He walks by the Sea of Galilee and calls the fishing folk to “follow me.” At the end of His ministry, He will tell those same disciples to “Go and make disciples of all nations,” thus fulfilling completely God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis 12. Today when we invite Jesus to be the Lord of our lives, that also involves the certainty that in following Him, we will be led beyond ourselves, beyond our families, beyond our own religious and ethnic groups to find and call forth God’s presence among all nations (people groups).
Prayer: Dear God, you called Mary and Joseph forth from Nazareth to Bethlehem and from Bethlehem to Egypt. Grant that we may experience their faith and the faith of Abraham to follow where you lead, to receive your blessing, and to be a blessing beyond our own kith and kin. In Jesus’s name: Amen.
