REIGNING WITH CHRIST
Exerpts and thoughts from the book Reigning with Christ, by FJ Huegel, Bethany Fellowship Press, 1963
God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:6 NIV
What is it that we celebrate during advent and at Christmas time? It is the birth of Jesus who has come as the first tangible sign of the presence of the Kingdom of God. What real difference has the coming of Christ made to our lives? My grandfather, FJ Huegel, wrote a small book in which he explains the meaning of the coming of Jesus and of our participation in his life and death. During this advent, I plan to read this book and to exerpt it and meditate on it with you. I hope that this will be a blessing both to you and to me!
FJ HUEGEL: So far as Christians in the main are concerned this [passage in Ephesians quoted above] is mere hieroglyphics whose meaning has never been deciphered. They groan and strive and struggle largely on the basis of human effort where the grace of God, though acknowledged, is scarcely operative, only to come to grief. Even at their best, they find the example of Jesus remains an ideal infinitely beyond their reach. The trouble lies in the fact that they are proceeding on the wrong basis. God does not expect them, as a result of their own efforts, to be like Jesus. He expects them to realize the utter impossibility of such a thing . . . He expects them to realize their position of utter oneness with Christ, for He has blessed them with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ (Ephesians 1:3)
Prayer: Dear God, I confess that I have no clear idea of what the Bible means when it says that I have been raised up with Christ and seated with him in the heavenly realms. I pray for the gift of understanding during this advent. Grant me to understand your work in me so clearly that I may thus become a gift to those around me. I pray this in Jesus’s name. Amen.
